Phonics Education for PreSchoolers

First Step to Knowledge - Together with us!

We teach synthetic phonics using the internationally renowned literacy programme called Jolly Phonics (UK). We focus on the individual child customizing the program based on the child’s learning aptitude using Auditory, Visual or Kinesthetic elements.

Let us help your child rediscover the joy of reading and learning.

Phonics

Jolly Phonics is a fun, interactive and child-centered approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics using songs, stories and actions. The multi-sensory method is very motivating and appropriate for children aged 3.5 years old and above. The program is split into 42 basic sounds, with a story, action and song for each sound. The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible. Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing. The programme continues through school enabling the teaching of essential grammar, spelling and punctuation skills.

Letter Sounds

The seven groups of letter sounds are:

  1. s, a, t, i, p, n
  2. c k, e, h, r, m, d
  3. g, o, u, l, f, b
  4. ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or
  5. z, w, ng, v, oo, oo
  6. y, x, ch, sh, th, th
  7. qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar

The five skills taught in jolly phonics

Jolly Phonics divides sounds into 7 groups through which the children learn to read and spell.

  •   Learning the letter sounds

Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds through story-telling, actions and songs. Two letter sounds are taught on an average every week.

  •   Learning letter formation

Using different multi-sensory methods like tracing in air & sand, on white/chalk board and finally using pen and paper, the children learn how to form and write the letters.

  •   Blending

Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.

  •   Identifying the sounds in words (Segmenting)

Listening for the individual sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.

  •   Tricky words

Tricky words have irregular spellings and sound so the children learn these separately to help them read. For example: he, I, again, there.
